Catch-up miscellany

Last year, a pair of swallows built a nest in our carport and raised a family. This year, they came back, and raised five chicks, four of them visible here. This was taken only a day or so before the young swallows started to fly. Despite the hassles of having swallow-poop on my car, I quite like having these families about – there’s something about looking up to see these cute faces watching one’s every move! This photo was taken about six weeks ago – we’ve noticed that the parents seem to have taken up residence again in the nest, so perhaps we’re going to see a second brood this year.

Coming home from work one afternoon, I noticed the unusual contrast of light as I turned onto our road. In the foreground, sunshine across the paddocks – but to the south, an immense bank of dark gray storm clouds. (I made it home in time to bring the dogs in before the storm hit.)
‘Tis the season… Now that it’s December, thoughts turn towards Christmas. This morning I made a batch of fruit mince tarts to take to a Christmas bbq lunch with our neighbours. Although I tend these days to put domestic-type photos on my other blog, I liked the circles and stars of the tarts within the larger circle of the plate in this photo.
